A new species of the Miniopterus schreibersii species complex (Chiroptera: Miniopteridae) from the Maghreb Region, North Africa

Abstract: (English)We used an integrative approach combining cranio-dental characters, mitochondrial and nuclear data and acoustic data to show the presence in the genus Miniopterus of a cryptic species from the Maghreb region. This species was previously recognised as Miniopterus schreibersii (Kuhl, 1817). Miniopterus maghrebensis sp. nov. can be differentiated from M. schreibersii sensu stricto on the basis of cranial characters and from mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite evidence. Although slight external morpholog… Show more

“…Although M. fuliginosus and M. magnater can be identified based on genetic data, it is difficult to distinguish them in the field from living individuals because of their overlapping morphological characters, which is very common in Genus Miniopterus bat species, such as M. schreibersii and M. maghrebensis, or M. pallidus (Furman et al 2009;Bilgin et al 2012, Puechmaille et al 2014. In this study, we found that the FA, M 3 width, and GLS were significantly different between M. fuliginosus and M. magnater, with individuals from M. magnater significantly larger than those of M. fuliginosus.…”

“…Setzer (1957) in his review of Libyan mammals, treated E. isabellinus as a distinct species and stated that it had not been taken since Temminck's description. He noted that Zavattari (1934) Puechmaille et al (2014) used an integrative approach combining cranio-dental characters, mitochondrial and nuclear data and acoustic data to show the presence in the genus Miniopterus of a cryptic species from the Maghreb region, which they described as Miniopterus maghrebensis. Being a cryptic species, it was previously considered as Miniopterus schreibersii (Kuhl, 1817).…”

“…Miniopterus schreibersii -европски дугокрилаш** Извесно је да се ова врста, како је до скора била дефинисана (Simmons 2005), уствари састоји од већег броја сестринских врста (Hoofer & Van Den Bussche 2003, Appleton et al 2004, Dietz et al 2009, Agnarsson et al 2011, Šrámek et al 2013, а процес њиховог издвајања и дефинисања још увек је у току (нпр. Tian et al 2004, Furman et al 2010, Bilgin et al 2012, Monadjem 2013, Šrámek et al 2013, Christidis et al 2014, Puechmaille et al 2014. Ове врсте се међусобно морфолошки углавном само незнатно разликују (Dietz et al 2009, Furman et al 2010, Šrámek et al 2013, а њихове еколошке карактеристике још увек нису довољно познате.…”
