A new species of the Eigenmannia trilineata (Gymnotiformes: Sternopygidae) species group from the río Orinoco basin, Venezuela

Abstract: A new species of the Eigenmannia trilineata species group is described from the río Orinoco basin, Venezuela. The new species is distinguished from congeners by a unique set of characters including an ossified basibranchial 1; 198-217 anal-fin rays; suborbital depth, 21.3-26.1% HL; length of anterodorsal process of maxilla equal to the width of the posterior nostril; premaxilla with 17 teeth distributed in three rows; hyaline pectoral and anal fins; and number of scale series above lateral line, 9-10. It raise… Show more

“…Due to the doubtful status of Eigenmannia as a monophyletic genus, the inclusion of the E . sirius in Eigenmannia is provisionally justified by the presence in the former of the synapomorphies of Eigenmanniinae [15,19–21], and by the absence of those synapomorphies of the remaining Eigenmanniinae genera as discussed by previous studies [9,10,23,25,45]. In addition to our conservative position regarding the proposal of a new genus, we detail the differences between the species described herein and the current definition of all eigenmanniin genera (for external features see Diagnosis).…”

“…In a recent contribution, Waltz & Albert [10] arbitrarily assigned E . meeki to the Eigenmannia trilineata species-group ([10]: 399; and Table 2 explicitly based on other contributions e.g., [8,2325,45]). However, the color pattern of E .…”

“…in taxonomic inventories (e.g., Sarmento-Soares et al 2009a, Cetra et al 2010, Burger et al 2011, Ramos et al 2014. Although numerous freshwater fish species from the Bahia river basins have been described in the last two decades (e.g., Bertaco & Lucena 2006, Ribeiro & Lucena 2006, Lima & Britski 2007, Benine et al 2007, Zanata & Camelier 2008, 2010, 2015, Bichuette et al 2008, Sarmento-Soares et al 2009b, Sarmento-Soares et al 2011, Ferreira et al 2014, Vari et al 2010, Bichuette & Rizzato 2012, Oliveira et al 2013, Sarmento-Soares & Martins-Pinheiro 2013, Camelier & Zanata 2014b, 2017, 2018, Mattos et al 2015, Peixoto & Wosiacki 2016, Zanata & Pitanga 2016, Zawadzki et al, 2017Barreto et al 2018, Mattos & Costa, 2018, Burger et al 2019, Lucena & Lucena 2019, ichthyological explorations continue to reveal unknown species, especially in small tributaries and in upper drainage areas. The increase in the number of species recently described from the São Francisco river basin has already been documented in the literature (see Alves et al 2011 andBarbosa et al 2017).…”

“…Despite several recent taxonomic contributions (Campos‐da‐Paz & Queiroz, 2017; Dutra et al ., 2017, 2018; Herrera‐Collazos et al ., 2020; Peixoto et al ., 2015; Peixoto & Ohara, 2019; Peixoto & Waltz, 2017; Peixoto & Wosiacki, 2016; Waltz & Albert, 2018), the monophyly of Eigenmannia still awaits further phylogenetic studies, and currently its infrageneric classification is based on informal groups of species (see discussion in Peixoto & Ohara, 2019: Table 2). Among these, the Eigenmannia trilineata species group allocates the highest number of species and encompasses taxa that exhibit a midlateral stripe between the LL and the proximal portion of the pterygiophores of the anal fin, named the ‘superior midlateral stripe’ (Peixoto et al ., 2015; Peixoto & Wosiacki, 2016).…”
