A new species of the genus Goezia Zeder, 1800 (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from the fish, Mastacembelus armatus (Lacep.) from West Bengal, India

Abstract: Goezia moraveci n. sp. is described from light microscope and scanning electron microscope studies of the specimens recovered from the freshwater fish Mastacembelus armatus from West Bengal, India. G. moraveci differs from other species of the genus in having a small body size, the excretory pore posterior to the level of the nerve-ring, a very short, wide intestinal caecum and a long ventricular appendage (ratio 1 : 6-15), a different number and arrangement of caudal papillae, and cuticular spines surrounding… Show more

“…The present species possesses pairs of laterally disposed precloacal papillae near the level of the cloaca, similar to G. pelagia, G. moraveci and G. lacerticola, but these three species do not have laterally disposed postcloacal papillae which are present in G. bangladeshi. The present species resembles G. moraveci De & Day, 1992 described from a freshwater fish, Mastacembalus armatus from India, only in the structure of the caudal papillae which are encircled by spines and in the laterally dispersed postcloacal papillae. The 'sunflower' caudal papillae in G. bangladeshi are very striking ( fig.…”

“…There are several studies of the Goezia, but most of these focus on parasite description. Only low prevalences were reported in P. corruscans infected with G. spinulosa (Hamann, 1984) (8.33%), Mastacembelus armatus infected with G. moraveci De & Dey, 1992 (0.09%), and Goezia larvae from Rhamdia guatemalensis (Moravec et al, 1995) (0.12%). In this study, the massive presence of G. leporini n. sp.…”

“…Nevertheless, a thin membrane surrounding the proximal spicule extremity was in according with that reported in G. spinulosa studied by Baylis (1927) and Santos et al (1979), and G. nonipapillata Osorio-Sarabia, 1982. On the other hand, G. holmesi Sprent, 1978, and G. moraveci (De & Dey, 1992) have presented spicules with proximal and distal alae.…”
