A new species of planthopper in the genus Myxia (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cixiidae) from the Reserva Privada el Silencio de Los Angeles Cloud Forest in Costa Rica

Abstract: A new species of Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Cixiidae: Cixiinae: Oecleini) is established as Myxia baynardi sp. n. collected from native palms in cloud forest habitat in Costa Rica. Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters. Haplaxius delta (Kramer) was collected along the Caribbean coast as a new country record for Costa Rica. Based on morphological characters observed and molecular analysis of … Show more

“…Myxia hernandezi sp. n. represents the 4 th described species of Myxia, all of which are reported within Mesoamerica, with all four species documented on palms from Costa Rica (Bahder et al 2019a(Bahder et al , 2020Echavarria et al 2021). From both available specimens and the citizen science database iNaturalist (viz.…”

“…PCR parameters, sequence data, and analysis. To obtain COI for the novel taxon a degenerate forward primer was designed using available COI data from cixiids in the tribe Oecleini in GenBank due to failed attempts to amplify using primers in Echavarria et al (2021) and the reverse primer was the reverse compliment of the C1-J-2195 primer by Simon et al (1994). To obtain 18S sequence data, the primers developed by Bahder et al (2019b) were used and to obtain H3 sequence data, sequence available from Urban & Cryan 2007 were aligned and degenerate primers were designed visually.…”

“…Recent surveys of planthoppers associated with palms in Costa Rica has led (so far) to the description of 14 new species, including five oecleine cixiids (two Haplaxius Fowler, three Myxia Bahder & Bahder et al 2019aBahder et al , 2020aBarrantes et al 2021;Echavarria et al 2021aEchavarria et al , 2021b; eight cenchreine derbids (in five genera; Bahder et al 2019bBahder et al , 2020bBahder et al , 2020cBahder et al , 2021aBahder et al 2020bBahder et al , 2020cEchavarria et al 2021c) and one otiocerine derbid (Anotia Kirby; Barrantes et al 2020). The impetus for this survey activity is a renewed interest in the epidemiology of palm lethal decline phytoplasmas and their putative vectors in Florida and the Caribbean basin.…”

“…As currently defined, Haplaxius may be heterogeneous (Kramer 1979, Bahder et al 2019 with significant variation in habitus and genitalia. The description of the related genus Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Bahder et al 2019), and the subsequent movement of M. delta Kramer from Haplaxius into Myxia (Echavarria et al 2021), further suggests that the composition and limits of Haplaxius need review.…”
