A new species of Neocosmocercella Baker & Vaucher, 1983 (Nematoda: Cosmocercidae), a parasite of Phyllomedusa vaillantii Boulenger (Anura: Phyllomedusidae) in the Caxiuanã National Forest, eastern Amazon, Brazil

Abstract: Neocosmocercella bakeri n. sp. is described from the large intestine of Phyllomedusa vaillantii Boulenger collected in the Caxiuanã National Forest in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon. The new species is easily distinguished from the type-species of the genus, Neocosmocercella paraguayensis Baker & Vaucher, 1983 in possessing a triangular mouth opening with three simple lips (vs three bi-lobed lips and hexagonal mouth opening) and somatic papillae, which are absent in N. paraguayensis. The males of the new species… Show more

“…Additionally, according to Baker & Vaucher (1983) and Santos et al (2017), the presence of hexagonal or triangular oral opening, simple or bi-lobed lips, and a well-developed vagina and elongated uterine sac in females are other morphological characters also present in species of Neocosmocercella, allowing us to assign the new species to this genus.…”

“…Additionally, females of N. fisherae n. sp. have a uniform body shape, an uterus containing only one egg, a reduced uterine sac whereas females of N. bakeri described by Santos et al (2017) bear 8-10 eggs in utero, the female body is dilated posteriorly and the vagina and uterine sac are more elongated. Regarding the male morphology, N. fisherae n. sp.…”

“…Two genera of nematodes, Cosmocercella and Neocosmocercella, were specific to one family of amphibians, Phyllomedusidae, and, so far, have been reported in the HC, the Pantanal and the Amazon [23,146,147]. For a long time, the genus Schrankiana was only reported in leptodactylid amphibians [33,148], but recent studies found species of this genus parasitizing phyllomedusine frogs in the Pantanal [23].…”
