A new species of Munidopsis (Anomura, Galatheoidea, Munidopsidae) from the Gulf of California, western Mexico

Abstract: A new species of Munidopsis Whiteaves, 1784 is described from the SW Gulf of California, western Mexico. The new species differs from all other known species of Munidopsis of the East Pacific by the presence of numerous antero-posteriorly compressed processes on the carapace, many of which are truncate and with crenulated anterior margin, by its oval-shaped carapace, wider in its posterior half, and by the short, subrectangular, narrow rostrum with an upturned distal portion. It also differs from the East Paci… Show more

“…Twenty-seven species of Munidopsis were listed from the Eastern Pacific by Hendrickx and Harvey (1999), with more recent additions from the Gulf of California (Ayón-Parente and Hendrickx, 2007;Hendrickx, 2007;Hendrickx and Ayón-Parente, 2013). Studies of the fauna of the Gulf of Mexico are relevant to the Brazilian fauna (Pequegnat and Pequegnat, 1970;Pequegnat and Williams, 1995;Váquez-Bader et al, 2014) but only two species of Munidopsis have been reported from Brazil itself (Melo, 1999).…”

“…The genus Munidopsis is the second most speciesrich genus of squat lobsters, numbering 272 species (WoRMS Editorial Board, 2022;accessed at: 2022-05-11). In the Eastern Pacific the genus is represented by at least 48 species (Hendrickx and Ayón-Parente 2013;Poore 2014). Munidopsis kensmithi can be morphologically distinguished from all other Munidopsis species by the presence of numerous granules on the dorsal surface of the carapace, pleon and pereiopods; the presence of a spiniform median process on the second, third and fourth pleon segments; the narrower and slightly directed upwards rostrum; the longer distal spines of the antennular basal segment and the equal spacing between the penultimate and ultimate teeth and dactylus, respectively (Jones and Macpherson 2007).…”

“…benthic detritivores (the squat lobster Munidopsis depressa Faxon 1893) occur at high densities and dominate the community between 800 and 1,000 m in the Gulf of California, in an environment characterized by hypoxic conditions (DO ≤ 0.18 ml/L or 8 m: Kamykowski & Zentara, 1990) ). Yet, individuals of G. diomedeae aggregate deeper, in water where oxygen concentration is usually higher than 0.5 ml/L, which likely indicates a lower tolerance to hypoxic conditions than other species of decapod crustaceans, especially other species of squat lobsters such as M. depressa,Munidopsis hystrix Faxon 1893, or Munidopsis alfredolaguardaiHendrickx & ayón-Parente 2013 (seeHendrickx, 2003: Hendrickx & Ayón-Parente, 2013Papiol et al, 2017). This idea is reinforced by the pattern of increasing density of G. diomedeae in water where DO values are above hypoxia values.…”
