A New Species of Prosthiostomum (Platyhelminthes: Polycladida) from Shirahama, Japan

Abstract: We describe a new species of polyclad flatworm, Prosthiostomum torquatum sp. nov., from the rocky intertidal zone in Shirahama, on the Pacific coast of middle Honshu, Japan. Prosthiostomum torquatum is characterised by a unique dorsal colouration, which is comprised of i) numerous orange maculae and blue dots dispersed all over the dorsal surface, ii) a transverse dark-brown line in the anterior part of the body running slightly anterior to another transverse white line, both of which are slightly bent backwar… Show more

“…The remaining 21 worms were anesthetized in a MgCl2 solution prepared with tap water to match the seawater salinity by using an IS/Mill-E refractometer (AS ONE, Japan). After that, the worms were photographed with a Nikon D5600 digital camera with external strobe lighting provided by a pair of Morris Hikaru Komachi Di flash units (Tsuyuki et al, 2019). Of these 21 specimens, two were fixed in 10% formalin-seawater for whole-mount preparation.…”

“…However, the potential species diversity of Polycladida seems to be high, since new polyclad species were described one after another by the ‘energetic polycladologists’ (a term coined by J. Bahia in Dittmann et al ., 2019: e.g. Bahia et al ., 2015; Bahia & Schrödl, 2016; Tsuyuki et al ., 2019). Besides, molecular studies have highlighted polyclad phylogenies (e.g.…”

“…1B). Morphological preparation and molecular methods are mostly in accordance with those in Tsuyuki et al (2019). Worms were anesthetized in a MgCl 2 solution prepared with tap water so that it had the same refractive index (or "salinity") as the seawater, using an IS/Mill-E refractometer (AS ONE, Japan), and then photographed with a Nikon D5300 digital camera with external strobe lightning provided by a pair of Morris Hikaru Komachi Di flash units.…”
