A new species of Juliomys (Mammalia: Rodentia: Cricetidae) from the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil

Abstract: In the present paper, we describe Juliomys ossitenuis, a new species of sigmodontine rodent from the Altantic forest biodiversity hotspot in South America. This new species can be distinguished from the two congeners by clear morphological, molecular, and karyological characters. Juliomys ossitenuis is known from rain and semi-deciduous forests above 800 meters of altitude in southeastern Brazil, ranging from the state of Espírito Santo to São Paulo. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial c… Show more

“…The tail is slightly bicolor and ends with a small tuft of long hairs. Moreover, in general, our results extend the finding of Pardiñ as et al (2008) on the lack of a pattern of isolation by distance among J. pictipes localities and corroborate previous morphological assertions that J. pictipes is a widespread species (Costa et al 2007, Pardiñ as et al 2008. Observed genetic variation among these cyt b haplotypes is moderate: it ranges from 0.13% to 2.3%.…”

“…Cranial measurements were recorded using digital calipers following Costa et al (2007). Further morphological examination, as well as detailed analyses of molecular gene sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b, confirmed our suspicion that this specimen represented a record of a species thus far unknown in the country.…”

“…In a previous study, the conventionally stained karyotype of J. ossitenuis was described and compared with those of J. rimofrons, and J. pictipes (Costa et al , 2007). Rearrangements such as centric and tandem fusions and pericentric inversions were involved in the karyotype differentiation within Juliomys .…”

“…However, the fauna of this biome is still barely known, such that discovery of new species is still common (De Vivo et al 2010). Since 1999, 14 new species of sigmodontines were formally described for Atlantic Forest: Abrawayaomys chebezi (Pardiñas et al 2009), Akodon paranaensis (Christoff et al 2000), Akodon philipmeyersi (Pardiñas et al 2005), Akodon reigi (González et al 1999), Brucepattersonius paradisus , Brucepattersonius guarani , Brucepattersonius misionensis (Mares and Braun 2000), Cerradomys langguthi , Cerradomys vivoi (Percequillo et al 2008), Hylaeamys seuanezi (Weksler et al 1999), Juliomys rimofrons (Oliveira and Bonvicino 2002), Juliomys ossitenius (Costa et al 2007), Rhipidomys tribei , and Rhipidomys itoan (Costa et al 2011). …”
