A new species ofOrobanche(Orobanchaceae) from the Balearic Islands

Abstract: This paper describes a new species, Orobanche iammonensis A.Pujadas & P.Fraga [section Orobanche L. grex Minores (Beck) Teryokhin] from the west coast of Minorca, Balearic Islands. The new species inhabits coastal rocky slopes and is parasitic on Anthemis maritima L. It is a small yellow plant characterized by a dense inflorescence with erecto-patent to subpatent pale yellow flowers and by eglandular and glandular hairs at the base of the corolla. The morphological features suggest a relationship of this new s… Show more

“…Despite its wide host range in coastal areas, it occurs nearly exclusively on E. maritimum in Ammophila arenaria communities on mobile dunes (Hipkin ). On Menorca, O. iammonensis similarly parasitizes E. maritimum (Pujadas‐Salvà & Fraga I Arguimbau ). O. amethystea var.…”

“…Recent approaches have shown a greater tendency than the earlier conservative treatment of Chater & Webb (1972) to treat host specific races within the genus as distinct species, these often demonstrating both a narrow geographical and host range. This has led to a spate of new species being described in the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the Middle East in the last two decades (see for example: Pujadas-Salva & Crespo, 2004;Pujadas-Salva et al, 2005, Pujadas-Salva et al, 2008Domina & Danin, 2014;Zare & Dönmez, 2014;Piwowarczyk, 2015). Delineating taxa objectively and reliably is important for informing ecological surveys and for setting conservation priorities: for example in the British Isles, the native subsp.…”
