A new species of Mucuna Adans. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Phaseoleae) from southeastern Brazil, with a key to Brazilian species

Abstract: A new species, Mucuna japira A. M. G. Azevedo, Agostini & Sazima, is described from Brazil. It has features similar to M. sloanei Fawc. & Rendle, but has pseudo‐racemose inflorescences and the standard petal measures ¾ of the length of the keel, whereas M. sloanei has umbellate inflorescences and the standard petal measures ½ of the length of the keel. This new species is restricted to the Atlantic forest of coastal São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. A key to Brazilian species is provided.

“…With more than 100 species spread over various tropical and subtropical regions of the world, Muncua is divided into two subgenera, Mucuna and Stizolobium. While Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) with 2n=22 fits into subgenus Stizolobium, it can be clearly distinguished from other species within this genus based on the visual descriptors related to its seeds, fruit and corolla (Wilmot-Dear, 1991a, 1991b, 1993Tozzi et al, 2005). Mucuna is a dualpurpose vegetable with pods consumed by humans and its tender leaves used as fodder for farm animals.…”

“…Recent taxonomic works on Neotropical Mucuna are relatively few, most of them being new species descriptions (Tozzi et al 2005;Ruiz 2009; Moura et al 2013a, b). Treatments differ in their estimates of the number of species of Mucuna occurring in Brazil.…”

“…Treatments differ in their estimates of the number of species of Mucuna occurring in Brazil. Tozzi et al (2005) included six species in their key to Brazilian Mucuna; M. huberi Ducke, M. Ruiz (2009) listed two additional species with ranges extending into Brazil; M. eriocarpa Barb. Rodr.…”
