A new species of Cambeva (Siluriformes, Trichomycteridae) from the Rio Ivaí basin, Upper Rio Paraná basin, Paraná State, Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Cambeva endemic to the Rio Ivaí basin, Upper Paraná basin, is described combining morphological and molecular data. This new species is distinguished from all congeners by characters related to the number of pectoral-fin rays, to the colour pattern of the dorsal and lateral surface of the body, to the presence of diffuse blotches in the ventral surface of body, to the presence of a pelvic-fin and pelvic girdle, to the number of odontodes in the inter-opercular and opercular patches, to the num… Show more

“…More recently, five pelvic-less trichomycterines have been recorded from the Argentinean Andes (Fernández and Liotta 2016), as well as two species lacking pelvic fin being described from south-eastern and southern Brazil (Ferrer and Malabarba 2011;Ochoa et al 2017a). These Brazilian species are presently placed in Cambeva Katz, Barbosa, Mattos & Costa, 2018, a genus comprising 25 valid species endemic to south-eastern and southern Brazil (Katz et al 2018;dos Reis et al 2019), as well as a single species from north-eastern Argentina (Terán et al 2017).…”

“…When collected, from November 1994 (older vouchers, NUP 1,387 and NUP 1,408) to July 2019 (latest voucher, NUP 16,016), those specimens were fixed with 10% formalin and are preserved in 70% alcohol. Most of the specimens measured and weighed are type material (paratypes) or non‐types designated used in the original descriptions of the species studied (Deprá et al., 2018; Graça & Pavanelli, 2008; Pavanelli, 2006; Reis et al., 2020b; Roxo et al., 2014; Tencatt et al., 2014; Zawadzki et al., 2016). The vouchers specimens used and their records are shown in Table 1 and Figure 1, respectively.…”

“…Those river basins are fundamental for the persistence of fisheries stocks in the associated floodplain, harboring several rare, endemic, and even endangered species (Cavalli et al, 2018;Frota et al, 2016). In fact, 14 (66.6%) of the 21 endemic freshwater fish species in the Upper Parana ecoregion (sensu Abell et al, 2008) NUP 2,610,NUP 4,462,NUP 5,548,NUP 5,568,NUP 5,569,NUP 5,570,NUP 5,618,NUP 11,789,NUP 11,808,NUP 11,810,NUP 15,226,NUP 15,942,NUP 16,058,NUP 16 Graça & Pavanelli, 2008;Pavanelli, 2006;Reis et al, 2020b;Roxo et al, 2014;Tencatt et al, 2014;Zawadzki et al, 2016). The vouchers specimens used and their records are shown in Table 1 Standard Length (SL) of each fish specimen was measured with a precision of 0.1 cm with a digital caliper.…”

“…The et al, 2012) and several other congeners (see Ferrer & Malabarba, 2011, 2013Reis et al, 2020b;Wosiacki & Garavello, 2004). Continuous characters, such as the number of branchiostegal rays and procurrent caudalfin rays, are useful for diagnosing taxonomic units and quite informative for inferred phylogenetic relationships.…”
