A new species of Australonuphis (Polychaeta: Onuphidae) from the eastern Pacific

Abstract: A new species of Australonuphis Paxton, 1979 from the Ecuadorian coast, eastern Pacific, is described. The new species is characterized by seven modified parapodia, cirriform ventral cirri on the anterior 16 to 19 chaetigers, subacicular hooks beginning from chaetigers 43 to 57, and cirriform interramal processes on chaetigers 7-10 to 16-18 transformed back in a rounded lobe. This species belongs to the species group with unidentate pseudocompound hooks. Other species of this group are A. beltrani de Leon-Gonz… Show more

“…Leptoecia is almost exclusively a bathyal and abyssal genus distributed mainly in the Southern Hemisphere with few records in the North Atlantic and northeastern Pacific [13,17,446]. Australonuphis, a genus comprising seven species, is also known mostly form the Southern Hemisphere, being reported from Australia and South America and with one species known from western Mexico [412]. Until very recently, Mooreonuphis was restricted to the American waters; nonetheless, the detailed investigation of small-bodied onuphids from relatively well-known areas led to the description of two new species from the eastern Atlantic [461,465] and two new species from Australia [458].…”

“…Villamar and Cruz (2007) reported three taxa for Ecuador from the intertidal zone of Monteverde (Guayas Province). A new species of Australonuphis , used as fishing bait, was described by de León-González et al (2008) in Santa Elena Bay (Guayas Province). In northern Ecuador very little is known about the polychaete fauna and only one ecological study has been carried out by Villamar (2006) in the intertidal zones of Manabi and Esmeraldas Provinces.…”
