A new species of Hemigrammus Gill 1858 (Characiformes: Characidae) from the upper Rio Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil

Abstract: A new species of Hemigrammus is described from the upper Rio Negro, Amazon basin, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by its unique color pattern consisting of a single humeral blotch clearly spaced from a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe, which extends from fifth or sixth anteriormost vertical scale row to the basis of the middle caudal-fin rays. Comments on its putative relationships are provided.

“…The genus Hemigrammus Gill 1858 currently includes 61 valid species and is widely distributed throughout the major cis‐Andean river basins across South America (Lima et al, ; Ota et al, ; Reia & Benine, ). Traditionally, Hemigrammus species have been defined by a combination of non‐exclusive characters, first advanced by Durbin (in Eigenmann, ): incomplete lateral line, teeth in the premaxilla arranged in two rows, inner premaxillary tooth row composed by five teeth, few or none maxillary teeth and scales extending to the basal region of caudal‐fin lobes.…”
