A new species of Cypris (Crustacea: Ostracoda) from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with comments on the first ostracod named using the Linnean system

Abstract: The genus Cypris, considered the oldest ostracod generic name erected using the Linnean system, comprises a reduced number of large-bodied species, mostly found in Africa and Asia. Only six of them are known to occur in Europe. Here we describe a new species, Cypris pretusi sp. nov., collected in small temporary streams and ponds along the Eastern Iberian Peninsula and Minorca (Balearic Islands). The new species is very close to the type species of the genus, Cypris pubera O.F. Müller, 1776, but differs from … Show more

“…The genus Cypris, considered the oldest ostracod generic name erected using the Linnean system, comprises a reduced number of largebodied species, mostly found in Africa and Asia. Only six of them are known to occur in Europe (Joanes et al, 2020). Cypris is related to mussels and shrimp, small, about 0.5-2 mm long, with a hard-outer shell, its individuals are found at shallow water bodies, stream, canals, biological ponds.…”

“…The appendages that protrude outside the carapace, are used for swimming and movement, or for pushing food particles into the body, or for crawling on the surface of the bottom (Myers et al, 2023). Classification of Cypris is a type of crustacean (Ostracods) as mentioned by (Joanes et al, 2020, Matthew, 2022: Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Arthropoda, Subphylum: Crustacea, Class: Ostracoda, Order: Podocopida, Superfamily: Cypridoidea, Family: Cyprididae, Genus: Cypris sp.…”

“…This species was later renamed Cypris pubera O.F. Müller, 1776(Mesquita-Joanes et al 2020. For Slovenia, the first mention on living (extant) ostracods is, not surprisingly, from groundwaters, mostly due to high interest of European zoologists to explore Slovenian karst region, especially caves.…”

“…The inland waters of the Iberian Peninsula host an extraordinarily rich crustacean fauna, which is characterized by a high degree of endemism, and the occurrence of relict taxa with disjunct distributions [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Among them, diaptomid calanoid copepods are known to be excellent biogeographic markers, due to their high degree of endemism and relatively limited distribution ranges, which are significantly constrained by historical biogeographic events [7][8][9].…”
