A new species of Colostethus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) with maternal care from Kaieteur National Park, Guyana

Abstract: A new species of Colostethus is described from Kaieteur National Park, Guyana, South America. The new species can be distinguished from close relatives by the presence of a median lingual process, first finger equal to second, Finger III not distinctly swollen but all fingers slightly swollen in males, presence of fringes on fingers, presence of a dorsolateral stripe from posterior corner of eye, absence of an oblique lateral stripe, and differences in tadpole morphology, colouration and pattern, vocalizations… Show more

“…Kaiei's rocket frog produces a call that is similar to A. beebei 's short, pulsed advertisement call (Kok et al. ; Pettitt et al. ), but has a slower pulse rate (average = 7.21 pulses/sec compared to A. beebei 's 11.3 pulses/sec) and a lower dominant frequency (average = 4.85 kHz compared to A. beebei's 5.4 kHz).…”

“…The golden rocket frog is closely related to Kaiei's rocket frog, Anomaloglossus kaiei, and the two species live sympatrically in Kaieteur National Park. Kaiei's rocket frog produces a call that is similar to A. beebei's short, pulsed advertisement call (Kok et al 2006;Pettitt et al 2012), but has a slower pulse rate (average = 7.21 pulses/sec compared to A. beebei's 11.3 pulses/sec) and a lower dominant frequency (average = 4.85 kHz compared to A. beebei's 5.4 kHz). We predict that these two call properties, along with pulse interval, may be under multiple selection pressures simultaneously.…”

“…B) is found only in Kaieteur National Park (Kok et al . ). During May–October 2009 and May–July 2010, we studied a population along the edge of a 455‐m high plateau near Kaieteur Falls (5°1′23″N, 59°28′52″W).…”

“…The diagnosis follows Barrio-Amorós & Santos (2009) while the description follows Barrio-Amorós (2006). Comparative data were taken from La Marca (1996), Kok et al (2006a), Myers & Donnelly (2008) and Barrio-Amorós & Brewer (2008). The toe webbing formula follows the system of Myers & Duellman (1982).…”
