A new species of Clinanthus from northern Peru (Asparagales, Amaryllidaceae, Amarylloideae, Clinantheae)

Abstract: Clinanthus milagroanthus S. Leiva & Meerow, sp. nov. is described from the Department of La Libertad in Peru. The new species is most closely related to Clinanthus mirabilis (Ravenna) Meerow, with further affinities to Clinanthus viridiflorus (R. & P.) Meerow. It can be distinguished from Clinanthus mirabilis by its wider leaves, the much more brightly colored and wide spreading limb, and the much lighter colored perigone tube (yellowish green vs. dark green in Clinanthus mirabilis). A conspicuous bulge just p… Show more

“…Although chemical and pharmacological interest in the genus Clinanthus has increased in recent years, only seven published articles about this genus can be found in the literature, and five of them correspond to the description of new species [ 1 , 9 , 10 , 21 , 22 ]. The first report of a chemical characterization and bioactivity evaluation of a species from this genus was carried out by Adessi and co-workers [ 23 ], who reported the inhibition of AChE and BChE enzymes by the alkaloid 6-hydroxymaritidine, extracted and purified from C. microstephium [ 23 ].…”

“…The new species described in this paper is the third species of the genus and the first record from Colombia. It is also the first species of the tribe Clinantheae, to which Pamianthe has been assigned (Meerow et al 2000; Leiva and Meerow 2016), discovered north of Ecuador.…”
