A new species of Charinus Simon 1892 from Brazil, with notes on behavior (Amblypygi, Charinidae)

Abstract: A new species of Charinus is described and illustrated from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Charinus ruschii sp. n. is found in Santa Lúcia reserve, Espírito Santo state, and is sympatric with Charinus brasilianus and Charinus montanus. The new species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the genus by the combination of the following characters: number of spines on the pedipalp tarsus, size and shape of the female genitalia, shape of the sternum and number of teeth in the cheliceral claw. The b… Show more

“…A similar distribution is also observed in the Caribbean C. acosta (Quintero, 1983), another parthenogenetic species able to live in anthropic areas (Armas 2000;Teruel 2011), and the Amazonian C. vulgaris Miranda & Giupponi, 2011, which is not found inside buildings, but in secondary forests and scrapyards (Miranda & Giupponi 2011). Prior to this study, most of the specimens from Israel were collected from a sewerage system in a single neighborhood in the city of Jerusalem (Judaean Mountains, central Israel).…”

“…Based on Miranda et al (2016c), this species may be separated from other Charinus in eastern South America by means of its large size, with carapace ca 80% wider than that of the closely related species, C. brasilianus and C. montanus, the unique small platelets of the sternum, the sucker-like female gonopod, the presence of ten teeth on the cheliceral claw and three spines on the pedipalp tarsus; and the similar length of the proximal article to subsequent articles of the leg I tarsus.…”

“…A abundância de nutrientes na carcaça deve favorecer este comportamento oportunístico em cavernas, especialmente quando se considera a habitual escassez de recursos tróficos destes ambientes subterrâneos, quando comparados a ambientes epígeos.
