Aim We investigated evolutionary relationships and biogeographical patterns within the genus Boeckella to evaluate (1) whether its current widespread distribution in the Southern Hemisphere is due to recent long‐distance dispersal or long‐term diversification; and (2) the age and origin of sub‐Antarctic and Antarctic Boeckella species, with particular focus on the most widely distributed species: Boeckella poppei. Location South America, sub‐Antarctic islands, maritime Antarctica, continental Antarctica and Australasia. Methods To reconstruct phylogenetic patterns of Boeckella, we used molecular sequence data collected from 12 regions and applied Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses using multiple loci. We also estimated divergence times and reconstructed ancestral ranges using two different models of species evolution. Results Phylogenetic analyses and divergence time estimates suggested that Boeckella originated on the Gondwanan supercontinent and initially split into two main clades during the late Cretaceous (ca. 80 Ma). The first clade diversified in Australasia, and the second clade is currently distributed in South America, various sub‐Antarctic islands and Antarctica. Dispersal from South America to the Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos occurred during the Eocene/Oligocene (B. vallentini) and in the late Pliocene (B. brevicaudata), while South Georgia and the maritime Antarctic were likely colonized during the late Pleistocene (B. poppei). Main conclusions Boeckella has a Gondwanan origin, with further diversifications after the physical separation of the continental landmasses. Extant populations of Boeckella from the Scotia Arc islands and Antarctic Peninsula originated from South America during the Pleistocene, suggesting that original Antarctic Gondwanan lineages did not survive repeated glacial cycles during the Quaternary ice ages. A continuous decline in the species accumulation rate is apparent within the genus as the early Eocene, suggesting that Boeckella diversification may have decreased due to progressive cooling throughout the Cenozoic era.

Thirteen new freshwater populations of the copepod genus BoeckellaDe Guerne & Richard, 1889 were found during three expeditions to New Caledonia (‘La Planète Revisitée,’ 2016-2018). The 12 populations from the Plaine des Lacs, which show remarkable genetic diversity among themselves, were identified as B. spinogibbaDefaye, 1998, the only species of its genus known from New Caledonia until now. The sole exception, the population from Mont-Dore 22 km further east, appeared genetically and morphologically distinct from the others and is described herein as a new species. The two species are distinguished from each other by the shapes of the male and female P5, female Th5, and body colour. A previously published key is amended to separate the species. Our concatenated COI+28S phylogeny places the two New Caledonia species as a new branch within Boeckella, distinct from the branches consisting of South American, Antarctic and Australasian species. All 13 Boeckella populations inhabit the extreme south of New Caledonia, an area known for endemism and high heavy metal concentrations in the soil. Extensive mining activity in this metal-rich area, begun in 1873, is now leading to conflict with conservation goals. By using aerial photographs to trace the fate of the pond that is the type locality of B. spinogibba, we confirmed that it disappeared between 2007 and 2014 as a result of the expansion of the Goro nickel mine.

Diversity of Freshwater Calanoid Copepods (Crustacea: Copepoda: Calanoida) in North-Eastern China

The distribution and diversity of calanoid copepods were investigated using samples collected from 37 lakes in North-eastern (NE) China in 2019. A total of 10 calanoid copepods belonging to eight genera and three families were identified. Among them, Heterocope soldatovi Rylov, 1922 was recorded for the first time in China. Species from the family Centropagidae were more widespread than those from the families Temoridae and Diaptomidae. Sinocalanus doerrii (Brehm, 1909), previously not recorded in NE China, is now widespread alongside Boeckella triarticulata (Thomson G.M., 1883), and the latter species is also prevalent in that region. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that calanoid copepods were significantly correlated with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen, conductivity, nitrate nitrogen, altitude, and dissolved organic carbon. TP was the most important environmental variable that impacted the distribution of calanoid copepods, including both fresh and saline–alkaline lakes. Integrating historical records, a total of 21 calanoid copepods were distributed in NE China, and we also gave comments on the ecology and distribution of these species.
