A new species of Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 from Morocco (Scorpiones: Buthidae)

Abstract: A new species of scorpion belonging to the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 (family Buthidae C. L. Koch, 1837), is described on the basis of one male and one female specimens collected at Sidi Smaïl in the Atlantic Coast of Morocco. With the description of Androctonus maroccanus sp. n., the total number of Androctonus species known to Morocco is raised to seven.

“…Regarding 16S sequences, one sample of S. p. pellegrini was removed after quality filtering. Moreover, another sample from S. p. chabanaudi whose diet was mainly constituted by Androctonus gonneti DNA was also removed owing to a strong suspicion that it was a laboratory contaminant, because this scorpion species is exclusive to desert areas from Africa (Lourenço & Qi, 2007) and the haplotype was identical to one amplified previously in the same laboratory. Sequence clustering resulted in a total of 84 identified OTUs, of which 18% belonged to host, protists and sequences considered unidentified.…”

“…It was partially revised by Vachon (1952), but since then it has been catalogued first by Fet & Lowe (2000) and last by Turiel (2013). Between these two compilations, many species were described as new, resurrected from synonymy, or raised from subspecies to species level (Lourenço, 2005(Lourenço, , 2008Lourenço & Qi, 2006, 2007Lourenço et al, 2009Lourenço et al, , 2012Kovařík & Ahmed, 2013).…”

“…With the contribution by Lourenço [ 25 ], a few species have been synonymised, some subspecies raised to the rank of species and new species described. After the publication of this first clarification on the taxonomy of Androctonus , more new species have been added to the genus [ 27 – 33 ]. Presently, the genus Androctonus contains about 20 species, some of which require reinvestigation.…”
