A new species,Aspergillus persii, as an agent of onychomycosis

Abstract: Onychomycosis due to non-dermatophytic fungi is a well-known and increasingly common infection. For the first time ever, we report two cases of onychomycosis caused by Aspergillus persii, a recently described new Aspergillus species. After ten and three years respectively, both patients showed relapsing nail infections, and mycological tests were still positive for A. persii. In vitro antifungal susceptibility tests demonstrated that both strains were only susceptible to itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazol… Show more

“…However, both P. lilacinus and Cunninghamella bertholletiae , isolated by infected big toes, were found in patients with known immunological deficiencies. We also found A. persii , already reported in medical literature to be associated with opportunistic onychomycosis . A. persii was isolated from the big toe of a woman, where it was diagnosed as the putative agent of a distal lateral onychomycosis (Fig.…”

“…Although the section Circumdati is generally characterized by the production of nephrotoxic ochratoxin A, this species produces this substance in trace amounts . The emerging etiologic species of onychomycosis include A. insulicola , A. melleus , A. ochraceopetaliformis , A. ochraceus , A. persii , A. sclerotiorum and A. westerdijkiae . The level of airborne fungi and Aspergillus section Circumdati was high in the houses involved in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in August 2012 .…”

“…They can also cause infections, although infrequently. A. ochraceus, A. sclerotiorum and A. persii have been described as agents of onychomycosis (4,8,9). A. westerdijkiae, A. insulicola A. tritici and A. pallidofulvus have also been recognized as pathogens for humans (6).…”
