ResumoEste estudo engloba as espécies de Balanophoraceae ocorrentes nas cangas da Serra dos Carajás, Pará, Brasil, e fornece descrições, ilustrações e comentários morfológicos das espécies na área de estudo. Duas espécies foram amostradas, Helosis cayennensis e Langsdorffia hypogaea, ambas com distribuição neotropical. Palavras-chave: Canga, FLONA Carajás, holoparasitas de raiz, plantas parasitas. AbstractThis study includes the species of Balanophoraceae recorded for the cangas of the Serra dos Carajás, Pará state, Brazil, and provides descriptions, illustrations, and morphological comments of the species in the study area. Two species are recorded Helosis cayennensis and Langsdorffia hypogaea, both widely distributed in the Neotropics.

Abstract:Lophophytum weddellii was known to only occur in unflooded forests between 500-1,000 m in Colombia and Peru. These new records for the Brazilian flora expand the geographic distribution of the species, and also show that it occurs near seasonally flooded forests at lower elevations (<500 m). This work presents taxonomic remarks, photographs of living and herbarium specimens of L. weddellii, as well as a geographic distribution map and risk assessment at the regional scale.

Langsdorffia is a poorly known genus of flowering plants unlike any other in appearance, resembling deep sea creatures, rather more than they do flowering plants. The scarcity, elusive nature, and remote locations of these plants indicate that further species may await discovery. Furthermore, little is known about the biology of most of the species already known to science. Langsdorffia, like other parasitic plants, is poorly represented in botanic garden collections, and should be a candidate for further research and conservation focus.
