A New Simple Technique for 3‐Dimensional Sonographic Assessment of the Pelvic Floor Muscles

Abstract: OmniView-VCI is a reliable method for pelvic hiatal area measurement. Further studies are needed to assess its reliability under contraction and the Valsalva maneuver and to evaluate its usefulness and reproducibility for diagnosis of levator ani lesions.

“…Over the past decade, our understanding of obstetric injury of the pelvic floor has improved considerably, mainly owing to the application of new imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and three-and four-dimensional (3D/4D) transperineal ultrasonography (TPU) [12][13][14][15] . 4D-TPU offers a reliable, dynamic and relatively simple method for assessing the integrity and function of the pelvic floor [16][17][18][19][20] . There is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that levator ani muscle (LAM) avulsion is the main link between vaginal birth and pelvic organ prolapse 13,21,22 .…”

“…All measurements were performed using the linear reconstruction with contrast enhancement technique (OmniView-VCI) 4,5 . The proportion of course attendees who were able to measure LHA increased significantly following the practical part of the course (23/61 (38%) before vs 61/61 (100%) after; P < 0.01).…”
