A new simple brain segmentation method for extracerebral intracranial tumors

Abstract: Normal brain segmentation is available via FreeSurfer, Vbm, and Ibaspm software. However, these software packages cannot perform segmentation of the brain for patients with brain tumors. As we know, damage from extracerebral tumors to the brain occurs mainly by way of pushing and compressing while leaving the structure of the brain intact. Threedimensional (3D) imaging, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) technology have begun to be applied in clinical practice. The free medical open-source softwa… Show more

“…A third approach, inspired by the recent work of Hou et al (Hou et al, 2020) is included for extra-axial lesions, where the lesion is zero-filled, though this is not based on virtual grafting. VBG uses various open-source Unix-based image processing programs in a fully automated pipeline, including ANTs (Avants et al, 2011) v2.1.0, FSL (Jenkinson et al, 2012) v6.0, MRtrix3 (Tournier et al, 2019) v3.0_RC3 and Freesurfer (Fischl, 2012) v6.0.…”

“…For instance, as previously mentioned, accurate 3D segmentation is a critical step in creating precisely reconstructed holograms to be integrated into the HoloLens headset from 2D MRI scans. Software such as FreeSurfer, Vbm, Ibaspm, and others provide the ability to segment the normal brain [33,34]. However, performing segmentation of the brain for patients with brain tumors is more complicated and often requires the combination of multiple modalities [34,35].…”

“…Patients with brain tumors are unable to make use of brain segmentation software tools. Three-dimensional (3D) imagery and augmented reality are now being utilized in healthcare settings where augmented reality and virtual reality are present [2] . Figure 1 shows how brain tumors compress and displace normal brain tissues.…”
