“…Internal consistency of the Diaper Dermatitis Scale (Buckley et al, ) resulted in a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.70. Corrected item‐total correlations ranged from 0.44 (item “papules and pustules”), to 0.49 (item “open skin”), 0.69 (item “extent of diaper dermatitis”) and 0.75 (item “severity of erythema and irritation”).…”

“…Erythema was captured as a separate concept in five instruments (IADS, IADS‐D, IASD.D.2, Diaper Dermatitis Scale and GLOBIAD‐M) and two studies (Buckley et al, ; Van den Bussche et al, ) provided empirical evidence about measurement properties of this item. In all other instruments, erythema was part of broader concepts that were measured (i.e., “perineal skin condition” (PAT), “type of lesion” (RDIC‐Lac instrument) and severity categories of IAD (GLOBIAD, IADIT‐D and DDS_Spanish)).…”

“…One of the most frequent reasons for dermatologic consultation in infancy is diaper dermatitis, also known as diaper rash [51]. Its estimated prevalence ranges between 7% and 35% in children aged 1-12 months; in particular, this condition was found in 16% of the children wearing diaper in US and UK hospitals surveys [52].…”

“…Moreover, the frequency of diaper soiling, diarrhea, prolonged wetness due to a low frequency of diaper changes and lack of barrier cream, may increase the risk of skin disease. Premature neonates are at higher risk because of the immaturity of the skin (6). Prevalence in infants (1-12 months of age) ranges from 7 to 35%.…”
