A New Route for Preparation of Hydrophobic Silica Nanoparticles Using a Mixture of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) and Diethyl Carbonate

Abstract: Abstract:Organosilicon layers chemically anchored on silica surfaces show high carbon content, good thermal and chemical stability and find numerous applications as fillers in polymer systems, thickeners in dispersing media, and as the stationary phases and carriers in chromatography. Methyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxanes) (PDMSs) are typically considered to be inert and not suitable for surface modification because of the absence of readily hydrolyzable groups. Therefore, in this paper, we report a new app… Show more

“…Figure 6 shows the effect of temperature on the NFs viscosity ramped from 30 to 100 °C. From the figure, it can be seen that both the NFs exhibited higher viscosity than the free-MFomax at ambient and higher temperatures; this shows that NPs loading could improve the viscosity of the MFomax because of NPs thermophysical properties (Protsak et al 2018;Xu et al 2015). However, the NF viscosity containing SiO 2 -KH550 NPs is higher than unfunctionalized SiO 2 .…”

“…While Henry’s mode type sorbed water can be removed relatively easily due to weak interaction (physisorption) between water and material, water sorbed on materials due to Langmuir type interaction (chemisorption on filler) is more likely to create long term outgassing problems in many systems with moisture sensitive units as this is harder to remove from the surface. Thus, surface treatment (for example, hydrophobic functionalization of silica filler surface to remove active -OH surface group 41 ) of filler materials can be implemented to reduce such interactions.…”

“…Figures 18-21. shows the existence of irregular surface roughness. This roughness and height up diameters of the nanocomposite, can be attributed to linkage of different synthesized chains of heterocyclic thiadiazole polymers, with surface of grafting silica to formation nanocomposite [21]. It is strongly dependent on the growing conditions and the surface processing methodologies [22].…”
