A new rotifer species: Lecane langsenensis n. sp. (Rotifera: Monogononta) from Vietnam

Abstract: Lecane langsenensis n. sp. is described from two locations in Vietnam: Lang Sen Reserve, Long An Province, and the Huong River, Thua Thien Hue Province. It is distinguished from L. arcula, L. aculeata and L. superaculeata by its longer lorica, antero-lateral spine, and claws. Moreover, the size and shape of L. langsenensis, L. arcula, L. aculeata, and L. superaculeata were measured and compared. The results showed that these species are completely different.

“…This study continues these efforts by providing a taxonomic list of rotifers from a variety of lotic and lentic freshwater habitats in Da Nang and by discovering seven new species in Vietnam. Our records of the community structure for freshwater bodies in Da Nang were quite similar to that of other areas in Vietnam [31][32][33][34][35], in Thailand [36], and in Cambodia [37]: with Brachionidae, Lecanidae, Trichocercidae, and Lepadellidae being the dominant families. Lecanidae and Brachionidae were represented by a large number of tropic-centered genera, specifically Lecane and Brachionus, in both lakes and rivers in Da Nang.…”

“…Recently, more attention has been paid to studies on rotifer community composition and distribution in Vietnamese aquatic and psammon habitats [30][31][32][33][34][35], leading to a recognition of the high diversity of rotifers in Vietnam. This study continues these efforts by providing a taxonomic list of rotifers from a variety of lotic and lentic freshwater habitats in Da Nang and by discovering seven new species in Vietnam.…”

“…New species are found very rarely, unless the environment is highly specific and has never studied before, although habitats rich in macrophytes may also be a place where new species may still be undiscovered. Thus, new rotifers are usually benthic-periphytic organisms (Segers and Sanoamuang, 1994;Segers and Baribwegure, 1996;Meksuwan et al, 2018;Trinh-Dang et al, 2019). Therefore, in rotifer studies identifying some new species for a national or continental range becomes very desirable and is highly rated by the specialists that deal with this group of invertebrates.…”

“…Studies after that recorded 65 species in central Vietnam (Zhdanova, 2011) and 49 species in Southern Vietnam (Dang, 2012). Most notably, recent studies conducted by Trinh- Dang et al (2019aDang et al ( , 2019bDang et al ( , 2015Dang et al ( , 2013 documented 100 new records to Vietnam's rotifer fauna and five new species to science.…”
