By their past and present diversity, rodents are among the richest components of Caribbean land mammals. Many of these became extinct recently. Causes of their extirpation, their phylogenetic affinities, the timing of their arrival in the West Indies and their biogeographic history are all ongoing debated issues. Here, we report the discovery of dental remains from Lower Oligocene deposits ( ca 29.5 Ma) of Puerto Rico. Their morphology attests to the presence of two distinct species of chinchilloid caviomorphs, closely related to dinomyids in a phylogenetic analysis, and thus of undisputable South American origin. These fossils represent the earliest Caribbean rodents known thus far. They could extend back to 30 Ma the lineages of some recently extinct Caribbean giant rodents ( Elasmodontomys and Amblyrhiza ), which are also retrieved here as chinchilloids. This new find has substantial biogeographic implications because it demonstrates an early dispersal of land mammals from South America to the West Indies, perhaps via the emergence of the Aves Ridge that occurred ca 35–33 Ma (GAARlandia hypothesis). Considering both this new palaeontological evidence and recent molecular divergence estimates, the natural colonization of the West Indies by rodents probably occurred through multiple and time-staggered dispersal events (chinchilloids, then echimyid octodontoids (spiny rats/hutias), caviids and lastly oryzomyin muroids (rice rats)).

Chinchilloidea are a clade of caviomorph rodents that includes seven living species, the Dinomyidae Dinomys branickii, the Chinchillidae Lagostomus maximus, two species of Chinchilla and three species of Lagidium. In addition, two extinct families are traditionally considered chinchilloids -Neoepiblemidae and Cephalomyidae. The phylogeny of the Chinchilloidea has so far not been well established and is based on partial analyses. Studying the anatomy and ontogeny of extinct and extant taxa, we propose homologies for the upper molars of Chinchilloidea for which these homologies have not been previously proposed: that is the Chinchillidae Prolagostomus, Lagostomus, Lagidium and Chinchilla, and the Neoepiblemidae Neoepiblema and Phoberomys. We identify patterns of occlusal simplification within Chinchilloidea and evaluate its importance in an evolutionary context. A phylogenetic analysis recovered Dinomyidae, Chinchillidae and Neoepiblemidae as clades. 'Cephalomyidae' have not been not recovered as a monophyletic group and 'cephalomyids' are closely related to Neoepiblemidae. Branisamys is not included within the Dinomyidae and appears to be a basal chinchilloid.

Rodentia é um dos grupos de mamíferos placentários mais diversificados. Representantes desse clado possuem uma ampla distribuição geográfica, ocupando todos os continentes, com exceção da Antártida. Entre as diversas linhagens que compõem Rodentia, destacam-se os Caviomorpha, um grupo de origem sul-americana. Caviomorfos surgem no registro fossilífero durante o Eoceno médio, passando por diversos períodos de diversificação ao longo do Cenozoico, principalmente durante o final do Oligoceno e Mioceno médio/final. Aqui compilamos as informações sobre o registro fossilífero desse grupo no território brasileiro e discutimos aspectos em relação à sistemática, morfologia, ecologia, evolução e implicações dos fósseis. Fósseis dos seguintes grupos têm sido coletados em nosso país: Erethizontidae (Erethizontoidea), Echimyidae, Ctenomyidae (Octodontoidea), Caviidae (incluindo Hydrochoerinae), Dasyproctidae, Cuniculidae (Cavioidea), Chinchillidae, Dinomyidae e Neoepiblemidae (Chinchilloidea). Os fósseis encontrados nessa porção do continente têm ajudado a contar parte da história evolutiva dos caviomorfos durante o Oligoceno final, Neógeno e Quaternário. Como futuras perspectivas no estudo dos fósseis de roedores do Brasil, espera-se que a coleta com controle estratigráfico de novos espécimes, revisão de fósseis depositados em coleções científicas e refinamento do conhecimento sobre a morfologia das unidades taxonômicas contribuirão para uma melhor compreensão sobre a diversidade e evolução desse grupo.
