A new RF and Microwave Engineering course enriched with advanced technologies

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In this study, a curriculum model including recent developments and technologies in the Radio Frequency (RF) and Microwave Engineering field by using a blended approach is proposed. This study covers the description of the content of theoretical and hands on applications, the integration model of the technological tools into the proposed curriculum, and the instructional approaches used in the new course design. The main goal of the course is to prepare students for future professional careers in RF a… Show more

“…In project-based learning, students produce an artifact (e.g., video; Krajcik et al, 1998 ). For example, Aydin and Cagiltay (2012) asked students to conceptualize, create, and then collect data on the performance of their own microwave filters. In this case, the filter itself is an artifact.…”

“…In the Electronics and Communication Systems section of the program, the aim was to go beyond simulations; students were provided with the tools to combine simulations with the development of real prototypes, performing real measurements with professional equipment and interacting with all the elements of a communication system [13]. Another objective was to use real scenarios in the classroom, to prepare students for a career in RF and microwave engineering [14].…”

“…Electromagnetism is a subject with the aforementioned characteristics. Instructors have been actively experimenting with approaches to make electromagnetism education more interesting and easy to understand . Carpenter of Imperial College, who uses finite difference models to approach field distribution using computer plots , was one of the earliest educators to use CAI in computer‐based electromagnetics education.…”

“…In recent years, universities have put more emphasis on cultivating the actual operating ability of students and more hands‐on experiment course and complex experimental platforms have been added. For example, Aydin and her team proposed a course that support student modeling and design of microwave components by means of computer tools, design fabrication, and design measurements . A more complex experimental platform, which is a real‐time Wi‐Fi laboratory platform on USRP and LabVIEW for wireless communications education and research , is proposed by another university in Turkey, and students have a more complete understanding of the architecture of wireless communication systems through such experimental platforms.…”
