Bentuk kapal penangkap ikan di Indonesia memiliki perbedaan hampir di setiap daerah yang terjadi karena pembangunan kapal yang masih dilakukan secara tradisional. Pembangunan kapal secara tradisional akan memengaruhi kesesuaian antara karakteristik kapal dan juga metode alat tangkap, salah satunya pada alat tangkap static gear yang dioperasikan oleh kapal di PPN Brondong. Oleh karena itu diperlukan identifikasi karakteristik kapal tradisional yang sesuai dengan alat tangkap static gear dengan membandingkan rasio dimensi utama. Kesesuaian terhadap alat tangkap static gear dilakukan dengan membandingkan nilai kapal tradisional dengan acuan. Perbandingan juga dilakukan pada setiap jenis kapal tradisional untuk melihat perbedaan karakteristik pada setiap jenisnya. Berdasarkan perbandingan nilai rasio dimensi utama kapal tradisional di PPN Brondong hampir sesuai dengan kisaran nilai di beberapa wilayah Indonesia. Selain itu, kapal jenis etek memiliki perbedaan karakteristik dengan ijon-ijon dan perau. Kata kunci: karakteristik, kelaiklautan, kemampuan olah gerak kapal, stabilitas, tahanan

Sharpnose sharks Rhizoprionodon lalandii and R. porosus are frequently captured in fishing activities in Brazil and are significantly consumed by humans, especially in southeastern Brazil. Both species lack population data and suffer intense fishing pressures and habitat degradation, consequently hindering adequate management and conservation actions. In this context, this study aimed to assess mercury (Hg) contamination in R. lalandii, and R. porosus sampled off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, addressing both animal health and public health risks. Sharks were obtained from two artisanal fishing colonies in southeastern Brazil (Copacabana and Recreio dos Bandeirantes), located on the coastal zone adjacent to Guanabara Bay, one of the most important, productive, and contaminated estuaries in Brazil, and a further three artisanal fishing colonies from the Região dos Lagos area (Saquarema, Cabo Frio and Rio das Ostras). Hg concentrations in liver, muscle, and brain in R. lalandii (n = 24) and R. porosus (n = 20) specimens were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. A gravid female measuring 112 cm from Copacabana is the first record for an individual of this size for R. lalandii. No correlation between length and muscle Hg concentrations was observed, and no differences between Hg concentrations for muscle or liver were found between male and female juveniles from either Cabo Frio or Rio das Ostras. No differences in Hg loads were observed herein for both assessed species. Low Hg bioaccumulation in juveniles and nongravid female muscle tissue was noted compared to significantly higher Hg concentrations in gravid females. Hg was detected in all embryos, indicating potential maternal offloading. As Hg thresholds for sharks in particular have not yet been established, whether the Hg concentrations detected in brain pose neurotoxic risks for these animals is not known. Public health concerns concerning adult R. lalandii consumption from Copacabana, however, are significant.

An ethnoichthyological survey was conducted with fishers from traditional communities distributed between the Lakes Region and the northern Fluminense region, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.The study was developed based on semi-structured interviews, with fishers with at least 30 years of experience. Fishers were asked about changes noted for the biological communities with which they interact with, such as reports concerning abundance changes, the disappearance of certain species or the insertion of new ones, as well as weight and size changes. The reported ethno-names were confirmed at the specific level whenever possible through photographs and complementary descriptions. Eighty-five fishers aged between 39 to 83 years old were interviewed. Fishing activity times ranged from 30 to 68 years, averaging 40.6 years. Fishers reported differing estimates from what was expected according to the known length-weight relationship for the reported species. In general, length estimates were closer to the expected for medium-sized fish from 0.3 m to 1 m. Sixty-nine ethno-names and their variations were identified, associated with 58 fish categories. Of this total, denominations were associated to 47 local fauna species or genera, while one ethno-name was not linked to any taxonomic identification. This study is the result of research financed by the Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity and the Pescarte Environmental Education Project, a mitigation measure required by the Federal Environmental Licensing, conducted by IBAMA.
