“…65 The importance of higher crystallinity index, however, will be dependent on CNCs application. Since the crystallinity affects the mechanical and physical properties, 66 the high crystallinity CNCs might be useful as reinforcement in nanocomposites, while the low crystallinity CNCs can be indicated to be applied as a food thickener or pickering emulsion. 66 Although the crystallinity might affect the strength and ber stiffness, the presence of the cellulose surface functional groups also plays a signicant role in determining the applicability and reinforcing behavior of the CNCs.…”

“…This feature is very important because there are four polymorphous of cellulose (I, II, III and IV) which can be used for different purposes. For example, type I is used for wound dressing and reinforcing agents, type II as raw material for bioethanol and pharmaceutical tablets, type III as stabilizer and type IV for aerogels 75‐78 . This work only investigates types I and II polymorphs because III and IV are obtained with other type of chemicals and treatments (anhydrous ethylamine or liquid ammonia at high temperature) 79 which are not employed here.…”

“…However, changes in the structures related to the hemicellulose and lignin components in NFC resulting from chemical treatments of yerba mate residues may occur. [36] Upon analyzing the samples of the hydrogels only with CMC (HC), with NFC (HCN), and those encapsulated with sodium alginate (HCNA) and with garlic oil (HCNAO), it was observed that there were no significant changes between the bands. Only a small alteration in the appearance of peaks was observed in the region between 2800 and 3000 cm −1 in the HCNAO sample in relation to the others.…”
