A new procyanidin B from Campylospermum zenkeri (Ochnaceae) and antiplasmodial activity of two derivatives of (±)-serotobenine

Abstract: Phytochemical investigation of the stem bark of Campylospermum zenkeri led to the isolation of five known compounds: (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (1), serotobenine (2), agathisflavone (3), lophirone A (4) and lophirone F (5), together with a new derivative of procyanidin B, a catechin dimer named zenkerinol (6). Serotobenine (2) is structurally related to decursivine which shows moderate activity against D6 and W2 strains of Plasmodium falciparum. For a better understanding of structure-activity relationshi… Show more

“…The ECD spectrum is shown in Figure 1. Similar structures have previously been reported from various Ochna, 27,31,32 Campylospermum, 22,33 and Lophira 34,35 of −21 (c 0.013, CH 3 OH). IR vibrations at 3382 and 1604 cm −1 suggested the presence of hydroxy and CC groups, respectively.…”

“…On the other hand, among the neglected diseases, leishmaniasis and mosquito-derived diseases are two major consequences in the tropical regions of the world. Agathisflavone has been found to act against a number of viruses (10,30) and such kinds of parasities (14,31).…”

“…Moschamindole (MCD), a rare phenolic amide with 8/6/6/5/5 rings, is a major bioactive constituent derived from a traditional Chinese medicine Phragmites communis Trin (Poaceae) that is widely prescribed to treat fever and atrophic lung disease in Chinese clinics (Nikaido, Sung, Ohmoto, & Sankawa, 1984;Tsitsa-Tzardi, Skaltsa-Diamantidis, Philianos, & Delitheos, 1990). Pharmacological screening shows that MCD possesses various activities, including antimalarial (Mbabi Nyemeck et al, 2017), cytotoxicity, antimicrobial (Abouem a Zintchem et al, 2008), antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-AChE (acetyl cholinesterase) activities (Peng et al, 2017), prompting its synthesis by many chemists. However, the antitumour activity of MCD has not yet been investigated in GBM cells.…”
