Abstract:The genus Tephrosia, belonging to the Leguminosae family, is a large pantropical genus of more than 350 species, many of which have important traditional uses in agriculture because they possess the bioactivity of phytoalexins. This review not only outlines the sources, chemistry and biological evaluations of natural products from the genus Tephrosia worldwide that have appeared in literature from 1910 to December 2013, but also covers work related to proposed biosynthetic pathways and synthesis of some natural products from the genus Tephrosia, with 105 citations and 168 new compounds.

This account describes more than 145 new isoflavonoids published between 2005 and 2007 as constituents of the Leguminosae, commenting on their source, identification, biological activity, synthesis, and ecological or chemosystematic significance. New applications of hyphenated analytical techniques for the characterisation of Leguminosae isoflavonoids are also reviewed, together with advances in biosynthetic studies. A checklist of new compounds by species is given, and 170 references are cited.

Earlier investigation on the roots of this species [8] has resulted in the isolation of 7-O-geranylbiochanin A, a new O-geranylated isoflavone. As part of our ongoing studies on this species, we investigated the stems of T. tinctoria and report here the isolation and characterization of a new di-O-prenylated isoflavone, 5,7-di-O-prenylbiochanin A (1) together with two known flavanones, 7-Omethylglabranin (2) [9] and tephrowatsin C (3) [10], and a known pterocarpene, flemichapparin B (4) [11,12].…”
