A New Polarization-Reconfigurable Antenna for 5G Applications

Abstract: This paper presented a new circular polarization reconfigurable antenna for 5G wireless communications. The antenna, containing a semicircular slot, was compact in size and had a good axial ratio and frequency response. Two PIN diode switches controlled the reconfiguration for both the right-hand and left-hand circular polarization. Reconfigurable orthogonal polarizations were achieved by changing the states of the two PIN diode switches, and the reflection coefficient |S11| was maintained, which is a strong b… Show more

“…In addition, manipulation of patterns is useful in avoiding noise sources, mitigating electronic jamming, improving security and increasing energy efficiency. The polarization reconfigurable antennas can switch the polarization characteristics of the radiators between various linear polarizations, right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and any number of elliptical polarizations [11][12][13].…”

“…Moreover, the progress of these antennas faces significant challenges to both antenna modelling and system designer. However, these challenges will come not only from the antenna design only but also from the surrounding technologies that enable reconfigurability [2][3][4][5].…”

“…Therefore, the multi-antenna structure with minimum mutual coupling employed for generating polarization and pattern diversity for reliable communication in order to load the MIMO operation into a smartphone for 5G communication. The 5G network also needs fundamental technologies to enable small cells, beamforming, full duplexing, MIMO, and millimeter-wave (MM-Wave) [14,15]. Simple structured and compact antenna elements with sufficient impedance bandwidth and isolation are desirable to be integrated into 5G smartphone platforms, in accordance with the requirement of mobile networks [16][17][18].…”
