A New Pigment Type:  Colored Diblock Copolymer−Mica Composites

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…In addition, DSC technique was chosen to characterize the synthesized materials and to study the clay effect on glass transition temperature ( T g ) values. When introducing clay into polymer matrix, it can restrict the chain mobility, inducing an increase in glass transition temperatures of nanocomposites 47, 59. However, in some cases, the creation of such environment around the chains is not sufficient to cause T g increase as reported by Lerari et al60 Indeed, it was reported in situ synthesis of PMMA/MMT nanocomposite where T g value was close to that of host PMMA.…”

“…The copolymerization of BA and MMA initiated from AIBA‐MMT at 115 °C is particularly slow. This can be caused by the low efficiency of the grafted AIBA initiator as explained by Ghannam et al46–50 when studying the in situ NMP of styrene from the AIBA initiator‐adsorbed mica. We performed the synthesis of spontaneous P(BA‐ grad ‐MMA) gradient copolymer with batch addition of 50:50 BA:MMA co‐monomers as previously described by our group,31 in the absence and in the presence of different contents of AIBA‐MMT.…”

“…The droplets are stabilized by a solvated polymer layer and a polymer solution/solid interface stabilized by ionic interactions. All these critical interactions are important for these materials systems, which include water/solvent (immiscibility), water/ionomers (only the cationic end groups are water soluble), solvent/ionomer (only the PS blocks are soluble and cationic end groups aggregate to form star‐like micelles), and ionomer/mica substrate interactions (strongly electrostatic attraction8, 20). This complex situation is schematicized in Figure 12.…”

“…In order to incorporate chromophore groups into the polymer chains, it was necessary to prepare alizarin‐based vinyl monomers. The experimental method has been described elsewhere 20. The comparison of UV‐vis absorption spectra of alizarin before and after chemical modification showed that the absorption band of CO at 436 nm was shifted to 390 nm and a new absorption band appeared at 329 nm, characteristic of CC.…”

“…Second, one 2 Journal of Nanomaterials must be able to avoid the agglomeration of the CNTs once dispersed. As for any fillers or pigments [6][7][8], the stability of the dispersion is obtained by wrapping the CNTs with polymers which will stabilize their dispersion-thanks to steric hindrance or electrostatic repulsion. However, it is always difficult to exfoliate nanoassembled systems with polymers since the gyration radius of the polymer is of the same order of magnitude as the voids in the faggots.…”
