A new photogrammetric system for high-precision monitoring of tunnel deformations

Abstract: A new photogrammetric system has been developed to monitor tunnel deformations with high precision. The system fundamentally applies digital image correlation techniques to process images. It is digital in nature and is compatible with the industry's vision of moving towards the smart and digital monitoring of existing assets. It has been installed successfully within the London Underground railway and a number of other tunnels to demonstrate the potential of remote deformation monitoring of such assets using … Show more

“…Digital image correlation (DIC), or Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), has since its introduction in the 1980s evolved into one of the most versatile and widespread techniques in experimental mechanics [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Recent examples are found in diverse scientific fields such as biomechanics [7], infrastructure [8], material science [9], composite structures [10], and microfluidistics [11], but the technique is not restricted to these scientific fields. A quick search on a popular search engine lists over 50,000 contributions out of which 16,000 are published throughout the last four years.…”

“…Over the last twenty years, there has been a progressive use of photogrammetric techniques to support monitoring activities across a wide range of applications, such as environmental [1][2][3], architectural, mechanical or structural [4][5][6][7], and many others [8]. The affordability of hardware and operational costs, along with the simplicity of components and their high scalability, have made photogrammetric systems exceptionally well-suited for activities that require enduring or frequent acquisitions.…”
