“…Although the males of 17 Colobomatus species have been found, detailed descriptions exist for only 13 of them: C. embiotocae Noble et al, 1969, C. kyphosus Sekerak, 1970, C. pupa Izawa, 1974, C. mugilis Raibaut et al, 1978, C. gymnoscopeli Grabda & Linkowski, 1978, C. labracis (Delamare-Debouteville & Nunes, 1952 (male described by Raibaut et al, 1979), C. steenstrupi (Richiardi, 1876), C. mulli Essafi, Raibaut et al, 1983, C. quadrifarius and C. belizensis Cressey & Schotte, 1983, C. sillaginis West, 1983, C. deltotus West, 1985and C. mylionus Fukui, 1965(male described by Byrnes & Cressey, 1986.…”

“…In C.gymnoscopeli maxillipeds are missing as is also the case in C.pupa, those appendages being, however, found in C.embiotocae (Noble, 1969); moreover, the first two species possess uniramous 2-jointed mandibles as opposed to biramous ones in C.embiotocae.…”

“…So far, the most comprehensive and detailed descriptions exist for males of C.embio tocae (Noble, 1969) and C.pupa (Izawa, 1974), therefore both these species are referred to when analysing C.gymnoscopeli males. Similarly to C.embiotoce.e, the latter have 6-and 5-jointed 1st and 2nd antennae, respectively.…”

“…This pattern is repeated in the armature of the first and second pairs of legs in C. hispidus, which has the most setae among these species. (Leg morphology in C. embiotocae, however, was not described by Noble et al (1969).) In the third pair of legs, C. hispidus and C. arabicus sp.…”

“…The evidence is perhaps now sufficient to conclude that many or most species are specific to host families or genera, rather than to single host species. Examples of Colobomatus occurring in many hosts include C. goodingi (in seven species of belonids), C. embiotocae (seven genera and nine species of embiotocids), C. kyphosi (19 species of Sebastes), C. quadrifarius (three genera and eight species of haemulids), C. belizensis (two genera and 11 species of haemulids), and C. deltotus (four genera and seven species of mugilids) (Noble et al, 1969;Cressey and Collette, 1970;Cressey and Shotte, 1983;Kabata, 1988;West, 1992). In the present study, C. sillaginis has similarly low host specificity, infecting 13 species and two genera of sillaginids.…”
