In this study, Talaromyces qii belonging to the section Talaromyces is reported as a new record from India based on the morphology and phylogenetic analyses of four gene datasets viz. ITS, BenA, CaM, and rpb2. This is the second report of this rare Talaromyces species from across the world. Phylogenetically, the Indian strain T. qii (NFCCI 5151) formed a sister lineage to the type species T. qii (AS3 15414) due to the sequencing error in the type. The quality assessment of the four gene sequences derived from all type strains of section Talaromyces in this study evaded the proposal of a redundant novelty in this section, aligning the Indian strain NFCCI 5151 along with T. qii (AS3 15414). Morphology of type strain T. qii (AS3 15414) and T. qii (NFCCI 5151) are mostly identical, viz. elongated, biverticillate-symmetrical conidiophores, acerose phialides, and ellipsoidal or sub-globose conidia with echinulate ornamentation. However, the Indian strain has longer conidiophores and a larger conidia size than type strain T. qii and T. thailandensis. This study resolved the phylogeny of a new record of Talaromyces qii in the section Talaromyces from India through the most modern taxonomic approaches.

IntroductionPenicillium species exhibit a broad distribution in nature and play a crucial role in human and ecological environments.MethodsTwo Penicillium species isolated from the ancient Great Wall loess in the Mentougou District of Beijing, China, were identified and described as new species, namely, Penicillium acidogenicum and P. floccosum, based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of multiple genes including ITS, BenA, CaM, and RPB2 genes.ResultsPhylogenetic analyses showed that both novel species formed a distinctive lineage and that they were most closely related to P. chrzaszczii and P. osmophilum, respectively.DiscussionPenicillium acidogenicum is characterized by biverticillate conidiophores that produce globose conidia and is distinguished from similar species by its capacity to grow on CYA at 30°C. Penicillium floccosum is typically recognized by its restricted growth and floccose colony texture. The description of these two new species provided additional knowledge and new insights into the ecology and distribution of Penicillium.

Tidal flats have been reported to contain many microorganisms and play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity. In surveys of filamentous fungi from tidal flat sediments in China, seven new species of Eurotiales were discovered and described. Morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analyses of combined datasets of the BenA, CaM, and RPB2 regions support their placements and recognition as new species. Aspergillus liaoningensis sp. nov. and A. plumeriae sp. nov. belong to sections Candidi and Flavipedes of subgenus Circumdati, and A. subinflatus sp. nov. is a member of section Cremei of subgenus Cremei. Penicillium danzhouense sp. nov., P. tenue sp. nov., and P. zhanjiangense sp. nov. are attributed to sections Exilicaulis and Lanata-Divaricata of subgenus Aspergilloides. Talaromyces virens sp. nov. is in section Talaromyces. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of these novel taxa are provided. Their differences from close relatives were compared and discussed.
