A new paradigm for Aedes spp. surveillance using gravid ovipositing sticky trap and NS1 antigen test kit

Abstract: BackgroundDengue remains a serious public health problem in Southeast Asia and has increased 37-fold in Malaysia compared to decades ago. New strategies are urgently needed for early detection and control of dengue epidemics.MethodsWe conducted a two year study in a high human density dengue-endemic urban area in Selangor, where Gravid Ovipositing Sticky (GOS) traps were set up to capture adult Aedes spp. mosquitoes. All Aedes mosquitoes were tested using the NS1 dengue antigen test kit. All dengue cases from … Show more

“…Commercial Dengue NS1 Ag detection assays have also been used as a tool for the surveillance of DENV in field-caught mosquitoes. This approach has demonstrated the benefits of dengue NS1 Ag rapid assays over PCR [18,32,33]. The reported detection threshold of 10 6 RNA copies in DENV-infected mosquitoes by dengue NS1 Ag rapid assays was consistent with our readings for DENV cultures.…”

“…RDTs can be used as a simple method to detect DENV antigen in mosquitoes [ 77 , 78 ]. New methods to monitor DENV-infected adult Aedes densities using various trapping designs and RDTs have been proposed as a new paradigm in Aedes surveillance [ 79 , 80 ].…”

“…Moreover, the pan-DENV RT-iiPCR can work on both systems to detect the four DENV serotypes in DENVinfected mosquitos (Table 4). Timely on-site detection of DENV in human and mosquito can potentially alert front-line health professionals to allow timely implementation of intervention strategies and help focusing efforts in targeted areas to help mitigate disease outbreaks [1,38]. Performance of such tests near POC/PON could help shift health service more to local levels, achieve disease diagnosis at early stages, and reduce costs and turn-around time, improving health management quality in underreached communities.…”
