Summary Retrofitting depleted oil wells to extract geothermal energy is considered as one of the promising proposals to extend the overall economic life of oil and gas well. For successful implementation of this initiative, a comprehensive overview covering all aspects of geothermal energy extraction from abandoned oil well should be taken into account including technical, economic considerations as well as regulations and policies of respective local governments. Unfortunately, most reported studies have been focused only on one or two aspects, primarily on technical and economic aspects. Little or no study has focused on the policy sector. Moreover, these findings have been scattered, creating difficulties to extract essential information and dragging further development of the technology. This paper is therefore prepared with the objective to provide a comprehensive overview on the geothermal energy extraction from abandoned oil well, technical challenges in its implementation, economical consideration on the conversion of the well and government policy on energy especially geothermal energy and regulation on the utilization of abandoned oil well. To achieve this objective, extensive literature reviews are conducted with more attention given to recent studies on the field. Challenges on the development of this technology are discussed from technical, economic, and policy perspectives. Based on the identified challenges, required research and development as well as necessary policies for further advancement of this technology are outlined and discussed. By providing this comprehensive information, this review paper may serve as a good foundation and guidelines on the conversion of abandoned oil wells into geothermal energy wells.

The paper presents mixed models collected from the literature for calculating the thermal conductivity of the soil. They are created on the basis of combining the serial and parallel model. The thermal conductivity of the soil is the basic thermal parameter of the soil. Knowledge of it is necessary, among other things, for the proper design of underground infrastructure. The combination of models will help you to choose the method of calculating the thermal conductivity of the soil that gives the most accurate results and has the lowest error.

It is critical to precisely determine the performance of deep-buried ground heat exchangers involving different geological layers in engineering projects of the geothermal energy utilization. Compared to the existing approaches solving only conduction between the ground heat exchanger and the surrounding ground based on the two-dimensional model, this paper established a three-dimensional full-scale coaxial ground heat exchanger model containing both aquifer and aquifuge layers involving groundwater effect. The convective heat transfer in pipes was calculated using the empirical correlation of Nusselt number to improve the computation efficiency. The groundwater velocity in the energy governing equation was assumed to be constant and along with the horizontal direction to further simplify the computation. The developed method was applied to a 2800 m and 2600 m depth ground heat exchangers with different geological conditions, and was validated by the field test and published data. The relative errors are less than 6.9%. The thermal influence ranges of the aquifer layer and the aquifuge layer close to aquifer are asymmetric about the circumferential direction. The results demonstrated that the three-dimensional full-scale model is necessary for accurately evaluating the performance of ground heat exchangers when there is groundwater migration.
