A new observation of dynamically triggered regional seismicity: Earthquakes in Greece following the August 1999 Izmit, Turkey earthquake

Abstract: Abstract. The M•,=7.4 Izmit, Turkey earthquake triggered widespread regional seismicity in Greece over a study region extending from 400 km to nearly 1000 km away from the epicenter. Small events began immediately after the passage of the mainshock surface waves suggesting that the transient stresses of the seismic waves were the trigger. The increase in cataloged earthquakes in ordinary continental crust is a new observation and is statistically significant at the 95% level. Unlike the previous example of dist… Show more

“…1a for details). As mentioned by Murru et al (2016), this model is consistent with the segmentation model proposed by Armijo et al (2002) and in good agreement with the observed Marmara Sea basin morphology and geology Muller and Aydin, 2005;Carton et al, 2007;Pondard et al, 2007;Şengör et al, 2014). …”

“…Recently, evidences of dynamic triggering have been found also at the laboratory scale [6]. Dynamically triggered events may occur right at the passage of the seismic waves [4,5,7]. This is a case of 'instantaneous' triggering.…”

“…The first, was the jolt of the western end of North Anatolian Fault (NAF in Fig. 1) on 17 August 1999, that caused the M w =7.4 Izmit, Turkey destructive earthquake, which according to Brodsky et al, 2000, triggered widespread regional seismicity in Greece at a distance of 400-1000 km from epicentre. Transient stresses transported from the main shock could have been responsible for the enhanced seismicity which culminated in the Athens damaging event (no.…”
