A New Multi-Scale Method to Evaluate the Porosity and MICP Curve for Digital Rock of Complex Reservoir

Traditional investigations of fluid flow in porous media often rely on a continuum approach, but this method has limitations as it does not account for microscale details. However, recent progress in imaging technology allows us to visualize structures within the porous medium directly. This capability provides a means to confirm and validate continuum relationships. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of the dissolution trapping dynamics that take place when supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is injected into a heterogeneous porous medium saturated with brine. We present simulations based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method to model the combined behavior of two-phase fluid flow and mass transfer at the pore scale. These simulations are designed to capture the dynamic dissolution of scCO2 in a brine solution. Based on our simulation results, we have revised the Sherwood correlations: We expanded the correlation between Sherwood and Peclet numbers, revealing how the mobility ratio affects the equation. The expanded correlation gave improved correlations built on the underlying displacement patterns at different mobility ratios. Further, we analyzed the relationship between the Sherwood number, which is based on the Reynolds number, and the Schmidt number. Our regression on free parameters yielded constants similar to those previously reported. Our mass transfer model was compared to experimental models in the literature, showing good agreement for interfacial mass transfer of CO2 into water. The results of this study provide new perspectives on the application of non-dimensional numbers in large-scale (field-scale) applications, with implications for continuum scale modeling, e.g., in the field of geological storage of CO2 in saline aquifers.

Experimental Investigation of Injection and Production Cycles for Limestone Reservoirs via Micro-CT: Implications for Underground Gas Storage

Global demand for underground gas storage (UGS) is steadily increasing, with the limestone-based UGS system situated in the Sichuan Basin of China gathering considerable interest in recent years. However, studies focusing on the fundamental mechanisms of the injection-production process in these systems are limited. Moreover, existing studies utilizing physical experimental methods frequently fall short in effectively visualizing micro-flow or incorporating real core samples from the reservoir. To address these gaps, we performed a coreflood experiment, integrating micro-Computed Tomography (CT) scanning to investigate mechanisms of fluid flow and storage capacity during the injection and production cycles in limestone reservoirs. Our approach involved utilizing core plugs with artificially engraved fracture-vuggy structures, which mimic the characteristics of the reservoir. Micro-CT scans were performed to visualize the microscopic changes in fractured-vuggy structures and the distribution of irreducible water during each cycle. This study reveals that increased cycles correspondingly affect gas storage capacity, particularly by expanding it in relative larger vuggy structures while reducing it in finer fissure network structures. The amount of irreducible water decreases after injection-production cycles, likely being expelled alongside the extracted dry gas. This plays a critical role in expanding the storage capacity in larger vuggy systems. Conversely, there is a decrease in storage capacity within fissure network systems, as the irreducible water is replaced by gas. This leads to a reduction in the opening force of the fine conduit. The dense matrix has a very limited effect on the flow mechanism and its influence on storage capacity. Overall, these findings offer practical insights for optimizing injection and production strategies in limestone UGS systems within the Sichuan Basin, contributing to a deeper understanding and efficient utilization of this vital infrastructure.

Optimizing Micro-CT Resolution for Geothermal Reservoir Characterization in the Pannonian Basin

In the context of global efforts to transition toward renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, geothermal energy is increasingly recognized as a viable and sustainable option. This paper presents a comprehensive assessment derived from a subset of a larger sample collection within the Dunántúli Group of the Pannonian Basin, Hungary, focusing on optimizing micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) resolution for analyzing pore structures in sandstone formations. By categorizing samples based on geological properties and selecting representatives from each group, the study integrates helium porosity and gas permeability measurements with µ-CT imaging at various resolutions (5 µm, 2 µm, and 1 µm). The findings reveal that µ-CT resolution significantly affects the discernibility and characterization of pore structures. Finer resolutions (2 µm and 1 µm) effectively uncovered interconnected pore networks in medium- to coarse-grained sandstones, suggesting favorable properties for geothermal applications. In contrast, fine-grained samples showed limitations in geothermal applicability at higher resolutions due to their compact nature and minimal pore connectivity, which could not be confidently imaged at 1 µm. Additionally, this study acknowledges the challenges in delineating the boundaries within the Dunántúli Group formations, which adds a layer of complexity to the characterization process. The research highlights the importance of aligning µ-CT findings with geological backgrounds and laboratory measurements for accurate pore structure interpretation in heterogeneous formations. By contributing vital petrophysical data for the Dunántúli Group and the Pannonian Basin, this study provides key insights for selecting appropriate µ-CT imaging resolutions to advance sustainable geothermal energy strategies in the region. The outcomes of this research form the basis for future studies aimed at developing experimental setups to investigate physical clogging and enhance geothermal exploitation methods, crucial for the sustainable development of geothermal resources in the Pannonian Basin.
