A new misfit function for multimodal inversion of surface waves

Abstract: Higher-mode contribution is important in surface-wave inversion because it allows more information to be exploited, increases investigation depth, and improves model resolution. A new misfit function for multimodal inversion of surface waves, based on the Haskell-Thomson matrix method, allows higher modes to be taken into account without the need to associate experimental data points to a specific mode, thus avoiding mode-misidentification errors in the retrieved velocity profiles. Computing cost is reduced by… Show more

“…-use of global search algorithms, which are more robust because they mitigate problems related to local minima of the cost function and allow uncertainties associated to nonuniqueness of the solution to be assessed; -adoption of multimodal approaches, as taking into account higher modes besides the fundamental one increases investigation depth (Tokimatsu et al 1992;Xia et al 2006;Parolai et al 2006;Maraschini et al 2010), stabilizes the inversion process , enhances the resolution in Vs of the inverted model Xia et al 2006), and generally increases the sensitivity on model parameters (Socco and Strobbia 2004) thus providing more accurate results (Maraschini et al 2010); -joint inversion of dispersion curve and HVSR curve (Nakamura 1989), where the latter was available, to improve the reliability of the solution with additional constraints Picozzi et al 2005;Picozzi and Albarello 2007).…”

“…To obtain the wave velocity map, an on-site surface wave method has been proposed to involve multiple geophones to acquire the ground motion signals for the benefit of non-intrusive testing, effectiveness, and reliable data. The multiple channel data will be analyzed by interpretation algorithms (such as, the two-receiver spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW) method [11] and the multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method [12,13], etc.) to achieve an experimental multimode dispersive image.…”
