A New Method of Determining Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator for Specialized Ships

Abstract: Limitation of CO2 emission is one of the main goals and regulations introduced by the international institutions’ rules. In the case of ships using oil-related and gas fuels this problem is dealt with by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introducing the methodology of Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) determining for ships being under exploitation. The methodology allows for determining EEOI for seven types of ships, for which the value of this index depends on the amount of transporte… Show more

“…This measure does not set targets, so it is unlikely to reduce emissions significantly [40]. Prill et al [41] set out a methodology for defining EEOI for specialised vessels, given that such vessels may find it hard to apply the IMO recommended method. Other operational improvements such as slower ship speeds, the use of larger, more efficient ships, weather routing and scheduling would also help.…”

“…The role of EED is to measure the reduction of emission through technical tools, whereas EEOI and SEEMP both measure the operations that should be carried forward for the purpose of mitigating the greenhouse carbon. MBM has the responsibilities to operationally and technically measure the carbon markets such as the trading system emission [53].…”

“…In the last fifty years, maritime transport has gained great importance [1] because it is the most energy efficient way to move goods compared to air and land transport. It currently accounts for 95% of world trade transit [2].…”
