A New Method for the Rapid Estimation of Moisture in Wheat

Abstract: A rapid method of estimating the moisture in a sample of wheat is described. This method depends on the effect produced in a specially arranged radio circuit in which an alternating current of high frequency is generated. When a container holding some of the wheat under examination is introduced into the rapidly alternating electric field, a change occurs in the strength of the current which may be measured by an ammeter in the circuit and which may be immediately interpreted as a measure of the moisture conte… Show more

“…Grain moisture meters were subsequently developed based on this principle. Later, the use of capacitance measurements for moisture determination in grain was studied, and moisture meters were developed that utilized relationships between instrument readings and reference method moisture determinations [3][4]. The historical development of electrical grain moisture meters has been reviewed previously [2,[5][6].…”

“…Literature review: Part I Capacitance was used for determining water concentration in plant tissues as early as 1929 when Burton and Pitt (1929) measured moisture in wheat kernels. Tliey described an r-f (radio frequency) oscillator, with the customary I-C (inductance and capacitance) tank in the plate eircuit of a vacuum tube triode and a tickler coil to couple inductively the tank electrical field to the tube control grid to sustain oscillation.…”
