A new method for teaching microprocessors course using emulation

Parallel programming has become increasingly popular in the computer educational field over the past few years. Although parallel programs obtain the short execution time and the high throughput, learning how to write a well-structured and high-performance parallel program is still one of the challenges for most of students. How to let students learn parallel programming well is one of the important tasks that educators should resolve. This paper presents the learning of parallel programming using software refactoring methodologies and tools. Manual and automated refactoring are introduced to show how the learning is improved respectively. With manual refactoring, students learn how to perform the data or task decomposition and how to write a well-structured parallel software via customized programs and some benchmarks in JGF benchmark suite; with automated refactoring, students can transform the parallel parts quickly, and then evaluate the performance of a parallel software. Two automated refactoring tools are developed for educational purposes. Some of the experiences are also shared during conducting the course. ß 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Development of a photovoltaic panel emulator and LabVIEW‐based application platform

In this study, a photovoltaic (PV) panel emulator was developed based on a single diode model of a PV cell, and four prototypes of this kind emulator have been produced. In addition, an electronic potentiometer and a central control unit were developed to be used in experimental studies. Each of the developed emulators was planned to be at least 16 W in power. LabVIEW‐based interfaces were designed to reveal the electrical characteristics of the PV panel emulator and compare them with that of an actual PV panel, and the acquired electrical data were graphical analyzed with Matlab program. Results show that the developed PV panel emulator and actual PV panel characteristics are consistent with each other. A low‐cost system which does not need light source for experimental studies has been developed to be used in renewable energy laboratories, and to give psychomotor and cognitive behaviors to students.

VRCDEA‐TCS: 3D virtual reality cooperative drawing educational application with textual chatting system

Virtual reality (VR) products have noticeably improved in terms of quality and price in the last few years which made them more popular than ever. A number of wearable VR glasses are commercially available like Google cardboard. Moreover, leap motion is a small sensor that is connected to a USB port of a personal computer (PC) and allows the user to draw three dimensional (3D) shapes by tracking the movements of hands and fingers. On the other hand, Unity is a game engine which can be used to build 3D Games and VR applications using Java or C# programming languages. In this work, we present a novel 3D Virtual Reality Cooperative Drawing Educational Application with Textual Chatting System (VRCDEA‐TCS), which is a drawing application (app) that allows engineering students to interact together via text messages in addition to the ability to draw 3D models either individually or cooperatively whereas each student is capable of working remotely in a common 3D drawing area with the options of adding or removing parts to the design. Interestingly, the proposed app uses Google cardboard and leap motion sensor to create a VR drawing area and works on both windows PCs and Android smart phones. To this end, the app has shown a reliable and solid performance after being used by a large number of students of the school of engineering at the University of Jordan in which their responses were very positive and encouraging toward the features and characteristics included in our work.
