“…This was necessary as the fynbos is woody and not easily sampled using a sweep net, and beating is too harmful on the rare plants in the area (over 300 plants are either endemic to the area or IUCN Red Listed.) A D-vac consists of a collecting bag mounted in the collecting nozzle, which in turn is connected by a 20 cm hose to a 3 horsepower back-pack mounted engine (Dietrick et al 1959;Southwood and Henderson 2000). The nozzle width used in this study was 30 cm.…”

“…The substrates samples (2 kg) were evaluated for midge oviposition and larval development from the centre of the piles at 7-day intervals in the insectary. The Ceratopogonid midge larvae after developing in the organic matter were collected using the Berlese Funnel Traps (Dietick et al, 1959). The substrates were inspected for larger midge larvae (Forcipomyia spp.)…”

“…More recently Remane (1958) has briefly alluded to quantitative sampling of Homoptera Auchenorrhyncha by a vacuum-cleaner type of apparatus driven by a 500 cc. petrol motor, and Dietrick, Schlinger & van den Bosch (1960) have described in more detail another petrol-driven model. In essence, the design of their model is similar to that of Johnson, Southwood & Entwistle (1957), but the scale is much larger; e.g., the suction hose has a diameter of three inches instead of one inch.…”

Dietrick, Schlinger & van den Bosch (1960) did not measure the efficiency of their machine, but by manually clearing the habitat they were able to take what they called " faunistic samples ", gathering " all possible organisms ". Recently Dietrick (1961) has produced a smaller motorised version of his sampler that can be carried strapped on to the operator's back.…”
