A new method for online identification of civil structures: Virtual synchronization

Abstract: This paper presents a new approach, named Virtual Synchronization Method (VSM), for online identification of stiffness and viscous damping in a civil structure while it is subjected to a harmonic ground motion acceleration. It is assumed that displacement and velocity of the structure relative to the ground are measured in real time. They are used to define a virtual system similar to the actual structure. Proper controllers and estimation functions are designed to force the states of this virtual system to fo… Show more

“…Consequently, it is vital to estimate stiffness values of the structure in a relatively short duration at the beginning of the external excitation. In this regard, VSM 6 is a new approach for real-time identification of stiffness and viscous damping coefficients of the civil structure subjected to external excitations. Measured displacement and velocity vectors of the structure are required for defining a virtual system that is analogous to the actual structure.…”

“…In this paper the formulation of the recently introduced Virtual Synchronization Method (VSM) [33] is extended for online identification of damping properties in seismically excited structures. The proposed method solves a coupled synchronization/identification problem developed for different structural damping models.…”
