A New Method for Inducing a Depression-Like Behavior in Rats

Abstract: Contagious depression is a phenomenon that is yet to be fully recognized and this stems from insufficient material on the subject. At the moment, there is no existing format for studying the mechanism of action, prevention, containment, and treatment of contagious depression. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to establish the first animal model of contagious depression. Healthy rats can contract depressive behaviors if exposed to depressed rats. Depression is induced in rats by subjecting them to sever… Show more

“…Recent study was more focused on maintaining the viability of neuronal serotonin cells. Decreased neuronal serotonin cell viability will reduce serotonin levels so that it will cause symptoms of depression [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16].…”

“…For the subsequent study, fluoxetine (F132) was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA), and the rats were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 10 for each group): control, CUS, CUS + REMSD, CUS + fluoxetine, and CUS + REMSD + fluoxetine groups. Rats in the control group were housed normally without any treatment, and rats in the remaining groups were subjected to depression model construction as described in a prior study (21). For depression induction, the rats were exposed to a random type of CUS for 28 days.…”
