A surge in laboratory research into the pharmacological properties of bioactive compounds, as well as their potential to cure a wide range of ailments, has resulted in an influx of new herbal medications and extracts onto the international market in recent years. D. gangaticum (L.) (DG), one of the essential herbs of Indian traditional system of medicines is part of many essential formulations viz. "Dashamoola" and is used to treat various diseases. It is a perennial herb, locally known as "Shalparni" (Hindi) in India and also reported in many other tropical countries. This review presents the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and clinical effectiveness of D. gangaticum Literature was systematically searched through various databases, journals and gray literature through electronic and manual search. Collected data was further critically reviewed and summarized in this paper. It contains many bio-active phytochemicals viz. gangeticoside, leonuriside A, tortoside A, dehydrosoyasaponin, gangetin, gangetinin, desmocarpin, desmodin etc. among them, some have drug likeliness properties. Critical literature analysis revealed that it possessed many pharmacological activities viz. anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, anti- oxidant, cardioprotective, antidiabetic and hepatoprotective anti- bacterial, and anti-amnesic activities. Despite a large number of traditional therapeutic uses, D. gangaticum was evaluated for limited therapeutic efficacy through clinical trials and evidence suggested it may have therapeutic benefits on bronchitis, gout, hypertension. The biochemical and physiological mechanisms involved in the different biological effects exhibited by it need to be investigated. The herb should be investigated further, focusing on pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic and safety profiles. Well-designed Randomized Controlled trials (RCTs) should be conducted to support its therapeutic use.

Context Musculoskeletal system disorders (MSD) are prevalent around the world affecting the health of people, especially farmers who work hard in the field. Karen farmers use many medicinal plants to treat MSD. Objective This study collects traditional plant-based remedies used by the Skaw Karen to treat MSD and evaluates their active phytochemical compounds. Materials and methods The ethnobotanical study was conducted in six Karen villages in Chiang Mai province using semi-structured interviews were of 120 informants. The data were analyzed using ethnobotanical indices including use values (UV), choice value (CV), and informant consensus factor (ICF). Consequently, the 20 most important species, according to the indices, were selected for phytochemical analysis using LC–MS/MS. Results A total of 3731 use reports were obtained for 139 species used in MSD treatment. The most common ailments treated with those plants were muscular pain. A total of 172 high-potential active compounds for MSD treatment were identified. Most of them were flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and steroids. The prevalent phytochemical compounds related to treat MSD were 9-hydroxycalabaxanthone, dihydrovaltrate, morroniside, isoacteoside, lithocholic acid, pomiferin, cucurbitacin E, leonuriside A, liriodendrin, and physalin E. Sambucus javanica Reinw. ex Blume (Adoxaceae), Betula alnoides Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don (Betulaceae), Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC. (Asteraceae), Plantago major L. (Plantaginaceae) and Flacourtia jangomas (Lour.) Raeusch. (Salicaceae) all had high ethnobotanical index values and many active compounds. Discussion and conclusions This study provides valuable information, demonstrating low-cost medicine plants that are locally available. It is a choice of treatment for people living in remote areas.

The present research article proposes a conservative approach for the Desmodium gangeticum by using small branches instead of roots because the plant has many important chemical constituents that show different medicinal activity, so the plant's consumption is high. We studied here comparative preliminary phytochemical screening test and physicochemical analysis. The successive soxhlet extraction method was used for the successive extraction of roots and small branches with different solvents for comparative chemical profile study by HPLC and GC-MS. It was observed that many peaks in roots and small branches of the plant sample were almost similar, and the retention time of each peak in roots coincided with the retention of small branches of the sample. Therefore, the similarity was observed in roots and small branches of the Desmodium gangeticum plant in HPLC and GC-MS. The results obtained from HPLC analysis show that roots contain 0.00116% and small branches have 0.00026% of caffeic acid in Desmodium gangeticum. The small branches may have almost similar active chemical constituents like roots. In silico molecular docking study revealed that this plant's principal chemical constituents, pterocarpans, could be inhibitors of protein tyrosine phosphate kinase.
