A new Specklinia (Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) from Costa Rica and Panama

Abstract: A new species of Specklinia from the Cordillera de Talamanca in southern Costa Rica and western Panama is described and illustrated. Specklinia absurda most closely resembles Specklinia fuegi. It differs from that species in the pendent, single flowered inflorescence, whitish yellow sepals with red-pink veins and yellow apex, red petals with translucent margins, pandurate-trilobed, unguiculate lip with a distinct papillose isthmus below the anterior lobe, and reniform, erose, erect lateral lobes, with a Y-shap… Show more

“…The proposed affinities are Acianthera (Ac), Dilomilis (Di), Lepanthes (Le), Masdevallia (Ma), Octomeria (Oc), Phloeophila (Ph), Pleurothallis (Pl), Restrepia (Re) and Specklinia (Sp); the oldest generic name is used here for the species within those clades (except Pleurothallis). This phylogenetic arrangement of the subtribe, despite taking only DNAbased studies into consideration , Stenzel 2004, Solano-Gómez 2005, Matuszkiewicz & Tukallo 2006, Abele 2007, Forster 2007, Meyer & Cameron 2009, Karremans 2010, 2014, Endara 2011, Bogarín et al 2013, Chiron et al 2012, Karremans et al 2013a, 2013b, Wilson et al 2013, in press, Pessoa et al 2014, Karremans & Rincón-González 2015, McDaniel & Cameron 2015, Chiron et al 2016 *At the time of preparation of this manuscript the total species number for genus Masdevallia had not been revised thoroughly. **The number of species attributed to Pleurothallis excludes those names that have not been placed elsewhere but most like do not belong in the genus.…”

“…at some point or another. A more extensive molecular phylogenetic analysis of Specklinia (Karremans et al unpublished), excludes the species here treated as Anathallis (Pupulin et al 2012, Bogarín et al 2013, Karremans et al 2013b, requiring the circumscription of those genera in the present manuscript. It becomes necessary as well to propose the systematic modifications required in order to attain monophyly within Anathallis, Specklinia, and Stelis and to propose a segregated generic concept for the A. barbulata and its close relatives.…”

“…Carib., 29. 1760. Although this genus has been traditionally accepted (Karremans et al 2013), it was greatly modified by and Pridgeon et al (2005). As such the genus was broadened from its classic definition (Luer 2009) to include several species groups before placed in Pleurothallis.…”

“…(Luer 1986), the genus Specklinia Lindl. was re-established by Pridgeon & Chase (2001), and has ever since then, with some exceptions (Luer 2006), received general acceptance by the orchid community (Pridgeon 2005, Pupulin et al 2012, Bogarín et al 2013. Species in the genus are recognised by the tiny habit with ramicauls shorter than the leaf, obtuse petals, a ligulate lip, prominent column wings and naked pollinia that lack caudicles (Karremans 2014).…”
